A weekend down south in May

07:30 on Friday, May 14th saw us making our way to junction 24 of the M1, which is only 5 minutes run from where we live, a couple of minutes later and we were heading south towards Portsmouth.  After an easy run with little traffic we were pulling on to our pitch at Rookesbury Caravan Park, near Wickham in Hampshire, at 11:15.

Rookesbury Park must be one of the prettiest and well kept Caravan Club sites going, it is set in 18 acres of beautiful parkland and completely surrounded by woodland.  It boasts 153 pitches of which 67 are hard standing, and also has 12 short stay pitches for anyone coming or going on a ferry.  By 12:00 we were all set-up and phoned some friends of ours who live in Gosport, to meet us in the lay-by on the top of Ports Down Hill, where we usually go for an easy lunch when in the area.  Mick’s Mighty Bacon Baps have been very popular with the local community for several years now and they certainly take a bit of beating.

The lay-by overlooks the Portsmouth peninsular, and on a fine day one can see for miles, but that wasn’t to be so, it was as misty as anything looking down on the peninsular as the photos show.  Please over look the incorrect dates on some of the photographs, as we were trying out a new digital camera, and we had not had a go at setting the date and time in it.

Saturday morning saw us walking around the market in Gosport and later on we went down towards the Gosport ferry, where we saw both the LD Line’s, Norman Arrow coming in from Le Harve and Condor Ferry’s, fast cat leaving Portsmouth for France.

Condor Ferry’s fast cat coming in with, the Spinnaker and Lipstick Towers in the background.

LD Line’s Norman Arrow, leaving for France, with HMS Warrior in front of the ferry in the background, and the masts of Nelson’s HMS Victory just showing over the stern of the ferry.

Saturday evening we went for a very nice Chinese meal in Gosport Precinct with our friends and finished the evening chatting at their house, where sadly to say, we also had to say our goodbyes, because we were due to leave the following morning as the boss was at work again on Monday morning.

The photos of the ferries, actually shows the Condor leaving for France and the Fast Cat coming in from france, sorry about that!

Terry on a more serious note, can you give me some info on Buccanneer Vans? ie are they worth the money as I fancy a schooner? no dealer in my area has any in showrooms for a look at the quality. Seen plenty of Elddis Crusaders, but I want the know if the extra cash is worth paying for Buccanneer dontknow

Hi Jocky,

The Buccaneer vans themselves are A1 as far as I'm concerned, but a lot of the bought in products they use are not up to the same standard.  Although I have had more than my fair share of problems they have all been sorted out under warranty.  If you want to see what problems I have had go to Eldis in the manufacturers section in the Caravan Talk Newsgroup, go back to around September 2007 when we were thinking of buying one, or just do a search in that section on FM02MZO which is the name I used.

Other than that have a run down to the Caravan Club's, White Water Caravan Site on the Tees Barrage, the assistant warden has got a new Schooner on site and he will be more than happy to show it to you and discuss it.  Tell him that Terry Birch with the Caravel told you.
