On my last van I resorted to taking a spare tyre with me when ever I went abroad. The reasoning was that I often found it difficult to get replacement tyres abroad with having 13" rims.

One year after visiting just short of ten tyre fitters and god know how many miles not to find a tyre I reasoned that carrying my own would be advisable.

With the new van the tyre size is 185 / R14 and I was wondering if anyone has had difficulty finding these tyres abroad? I'm hoping that with them being 14" it should be easier to source.

If not I will buy a spare.

See my other post concerning the spare wheel carrier, that was in Spain and we got a new tyre at a place in Barcelona at midnight!!!  Not sure of the size or what they fitted but in those days I thought a tyre was a tyre. I know better now angel

i know it all adds to the weight but i would have thought a spare is always advisable to carry.

what a lot of bikers do is get that instant tyre fixer in a can and i beleive(not confirmed) you can get stuff to put in prior to a flat which stops it going flat in the first place

To me a 'van without a spare wheel is like a ship without a lifeboat!
Get your wallet out Muzz and don't risk ruining your holidays for a bob or two, it's not just the money side of it, you could spend a few hours at the side of the road being constantly nagged at whilst you wait for some tyre fitter to come.  Plus the fact the nagging would  get far worse when he gives you his bill!  € € € € € € € € € € €

Sorry I don't think I explained myself very well. LOL

I always have a spare wheel and tyre with me the problem I have found is when its used and the blown or knackerd one need replacing I have had big problems finding a replacement. I think a similar thing happen to Jocky last year.

You then end up driving hundreds of miles without any spare.

So with my old one I also carried a spare tyre as well as the spare wheel/tyre.

That way if I did have any problems it's easy to find a garage that can just swap the tyres without the hassle of searching for the correct or best match tyre.

My thoughts are with it now being a 14" rim the correct tyres may be easier to source??

Has anyone had any dificulty getting 14" caravan tyres in europe or should I go back to carrying a spare tyre???

Thanks

Muzz I would continue to carry the extra tyre.

Mines is 185/60 x 14" and as you said I had issues last year :'(

Couldn't get a tyre in Germany, Luxenbourg, Belguim and never bothered looking in France :-X

I drove from south of Stuttgart to Calais with no spare >:(

I'll be honest about that tyre size I had problems getting one in the UK ::) ::)
I remember that was a common size on cars in the 1980's :-X
Had to go to Caravan dealer and it cost me £58 + 10 fitting.

So next time when across the water, I will be carrying a spare, spare tyre just in case ;)
